Bedtime Stories for Liberals
Apparently the parishoners at St. Mary's in Platteville, WI don't take too kindly to having priests who might be faithful to the Magisterium... Read about their whining: http://www.thonline.com/article.cfm?id=286980

Pansy Potter wrecks the Beano office twice!!
Charles Griggs The Beano 8th Feb 1958

Note that both strips have Pansy kicking down the office door..and dropping a penny/sweet..
Its interesting the way the two stories are similar in the way they introduce Pansy Potter...

Green Hornet Trailer
Once upon a time, the "Green Hornet" movie was supposed to have been written and directed by Kevin Smith. It was also suppose to co-star Stephen Chow. Then came the delays and frustrations. Now, we get Seth Rogen as "Green Hornet" and Jay Chou as "Kato". Watching the trailer made me want to go out and hit something - preferably the film-makers. This thing is shit - the bad sort of shit, I mean. And it'll come in a 3D version in January 2011 - like all shitty movies do these days... :(

Smudge does have a Dad!!
The Beano 21st August 1982..
Smudge's Dad is a frogman on the oil rig so that is where he is..
Also love the details John Geering adds to his drawings like the flower very put out by Smudge using its flowerpot...also the ducks in the rain..and the mouse..
John does a great effect in the first panel showing heavy rain the house in the background is suggested in diagonal rain strokes..also great expressive faces..
looking forward to the 1980's era featured in The Beano and Dandy Heroes book 2011 coming in late August..

Review: Fire of Conscience
Forget Hollywood nonsense like "The Losers" or "The A-Team" with all that posing and shit. Forget "Infernal Affairs", "Election" or "The Departed". Go and see Dante Lam's "Fire of Conscience" for the real meaning of hardboiled cop drama. I'm surprised by how much I love this film. I mean, I do not even like Leon Lai or Ritchie Ren but put them into a film masterfully directed by Dante Lam, add in a great supporting including Liu Kai Chi, Vivian Hsu and Yip Suen, and you get a Hong Kong cop-classic.
I hate how the word "noir" is thrown about so much these days. But this film qualifies as noir not because of the way it is filmed but because of its subject matter. These days, artsy-fartsy film-makers go around with handheld cameras and shoot their shit in dark rooms. Then they call them noirish. Noir was always about the subject matter. The darkness in human souls. Dante Lam's film is about the "plague" within the hearts of men. Leon Lai and Ritchie Ren both play cops who walk around haunted by the "plague" within them. It's about nasty cops and nastier villains - but without the posturing of some Michael Mann piece.
I first saw this in the theatres and was surprised by how much had gone pass the attention of the censors. Colourful and risque dialogue from Liu Kai Chi, body parts flying everywhere in explosions, police brutality in interrogation rooms, etc. Saw it again on a Hi-Density DVD today and it was even better. If you thought the "Ip Man" movies are what HK film is all about these days, you are sorely mistaken. Go watch "Fire of Conscience" and "Crossing Hennessy" to see what quality HK movies are all about.

1980s Colecovision TV Ad
Time was, the CBS Colecovision was THE ARCADE EXPERIENCE. I heartily agree. It was the first and only games console I ever owned. I still miss it so much. Can I get one from Ebay?
Classic Game Room reviews the CBS Colecovision console. Once upon a time, playing Frogger on your living room TV was the greatest experience in the world. These days, everyone owns a PS3 or X-Box but nobody really have FUN anymore. Gaming has become too complicated and anal-retentive these days...

Spawn Origins Deluxe Edition Hardcover
Just reserved my copy of the Spawn Origins Deluxe Edition Hardcover with the stores. Yes, this monster is finally here. Now I'm thankful that I didn't pick up the previous 12-volume edition (mentioned here). This one comes with a slipcase and contains the first 25 issues of the series by Todd McFarlane.
Now, if Image will only release the Savage Dragon series in this format as well. Erik Larsen just answered my post on Facebook and said that he is presently collecting the files together for a new Savage Dragon reprint. I'm really, really looking forward to that one. Hopefully, Freak Force will be collected as well. That will make me (and Augie DeBlieck Jr.) very happy... :)
Speaking of things that make me happy, very few things made me happier in 1996 than a new Vampirella comic monthly. My interest in the character peaked when James Robinson and Joe Jusko did the painted 2-parter. I also liked the Pantha one-shots by Mike Texeira a lot. I also liked the movie starring Talisa Soto a lot. However, over the years the series fizzled and died. Harris Comics folded and now the character is owned by Dynamite Entertainment. The good news is that Dynamite is releasing a series of hardcover and softcover reprints of classic Vampi stuff. Read the news at Newsarama for more info.

The CBS Colecovision
I mentioned my CBS Colecovision console in my previous post on Donkey Kong. Check out the pics above. Time was, joypads did not exist. Instead, we got joysticks that looked like mobile-phones or walkie-talkies. Also, we did not have DVD-ROMS. Instead we had to buy expensive ROM-cartridges just to play a game (cost more than a hundred bucks per game, if I remembered rightly). Notice the slot at the side-bottom of the machine? That allows you to hook up with another console to play compatible games. I bought the Atari compatible and was so excited when I could start playing Atari classics like "Space Invaders" on my machine.
What set the Colecovision apart from all other consoles in the early 1980s was that it was classy. It had great sounds and graphics. Possibly that led to its downfall as well because Colecovision games were very expensive as a result. But for a 9-year old kid like me then, it was the closest you got to owning your own arcade machine at home... especially as I could spend days playing my favourite arcade game - no, not Donkey Kong, but ZAXXON!
Basically, Zaxxon was a game that allowed you to fly a fighter jet through a small opening in a wall and enter into a world where you're allowed to shoot everything you see. It's also the first 3D shoot-em-up game for players who have gotten sick of the flat-2D screens of Space Invaders. You could control how high the jet was flying and if you flew too high, a missile will come flying at you. At the end of each level, you had to destroy floating twin ice-cream cones (well, that was what the boss looked like to me as a 9-year old, ok?). How much more fun can a 9-year old boy ask for?

Trading Views: "X-Men: Mutant Massacre"
Two people who have never read 1980s X-Men talk about the classic "Mutant Massacre". The discussion is more of a review of the duo's knowledge (ignorance?) of 80s Claremont stuff than it is about the book. I'm posting this simply because it is a good example of the modern fans' attitudes towards Classic Claremont.
