The Christmas Dandy had two covers..one by Steve Bright was on the front this is the back cover..pretty gross decorations!!

I wonder if Tom Paterson will draw for the Dandy again look what they are missing!
Tom does a great job on Fred's Bed in The Beano at the moment.

Nigel Parkinson said in the comments on a previous post that The Dandy also did cut out booklets and here is one from The Christmas Dandy.

Happy 60th Dennis the Menace!!

This is the annual I bought at a jumble sell at Northmead middle school Stoughton Road Guildford...I was first in line and ran to the book section (I loved old comics even then)and got this gem...this is where I discovered David Law's Dennis...what a effect it had on me..Dennis was less happy for a start unless he was causing bother trouble...the art work was more darker..quickly drawn But full of life..








Gordon Bells take on Dennis...he also had a bit of Davy Law in his take on Dennis..


Nigel does a great Dennis in this era...it has lots of energy!!

Meet-ups Sweeny Toddler meets Scream Inn!!

Side panel gag...Come here I'm very fond of beans on ghost..

What is clever that Brian Walker has done he has included the Squiggly monster in the side panels and the strange man that often appears in Sweeny toddler see below..
also the style of Sweeny is in a Tom style..


Whats yellow and swings through the jungle Tarzipan! thats the sideways gag by squiggly..Tom Paterson does an amazing Sweeny and it is hard to tell the difference between him and Leo Baxendale who drew it before..

I feel that story could of been better drawn with more movement and the clocks more animated..

Tom Paterson's wrote this Jake's Seven from Jackpot annual 1982..

In the signature at the bottom of the first page Tom has said he had written this story..I've not seen this before so thought it would be fun to show..the idea feels like a classic cartoon...
Tom certainly shows the future looking very run down..:)

How come you ended up with Sweeny - I assume you worked
closely with Tom Paterson on this?

I thought it would be amusing to have Sweeny dress up as Judge Dredd
and shout, “Me IS the Law!” so I did a script with him on the cover doing
just that. I sent it to IPC and Mark Rodgers (him again!) happened to be in
the office at the time. Bob Paynter was taken with the Sweeny idea, and was
showing it to his pals, saying, “Look what Tom did!” Mark recognised the style
and pointed out that I did it, so they then offered me Sweeny on a full-time
basis. I don’t know who was doing it before then. I was very happy to get the
cover and the best character. Sadly, I don’t know Tom Paterson at all!
The scripts were sent to IPC, and then on to Tom, who did his wonderful
stuff. As we are both Baxendale fans, it wasn’t hard to keep everything
consistent with the Sweeny style. A lot of writers and artists must have
shared the feeling of tossing work out into a void, then seeing it in print a
month or so later. It was very strange.

This only lasted a few issues..then Hunt Emerson drew a great version later for the Beano.

Love to see Tom Paterson doing this strip again.it would be great fun with the menacing bears and the comical fights.

Lew Stringer drawing for Whoopee!! and Jackpot annual!

From Jackpot annual 1986....see Lews' signature in the first panel..a ghost artist with a name...normally drawn by Tom Paterson.

Hi Peter,

Regarding the Scooper strip. Although I'd been freelancing for Marvel UK since 1983, the Jackpot Annual job was my first published strip for IPC. I'd already drawn the first Tom Thug strip for IPC but that remained unpublished at that time while the company made their minds up about the comic. So Bob Paynter, Group Editor of the IPC humour comics, kindly offered me the Jackpot Annual four pager.

I was asked to ghost Tom Paterson's style, but I was allowed to sign my name to the strip. I was quite anxious drawing it, - my first strip for the mighty IPC, and in an annual too, but very pleased with how it turned out. It's not perfect by any means, and I'm sure I'd draw it differently today, but it was fun to do. I can't remember who wrote the script but Bob Paynter had subbed it and changed some bits before I received it.

The following year I did a six page Bookworm strip for the Whoopee Annual, which I both scripted and drew. This time I was asked to ghost Syd Burgon slightly but give it my own touch. That was a fun one too, as I had Bookworm go to an alien planet.

From Whoopee!! annual 1987. It was normal practice for other artist to draw other peoples strip. It was a good platform for new comic artists to be tried out.












Lew Stringer who signs this work in a special annual Sci-fi story...very different to a normal Bookworm down to earth story. Its great fun seeing the aliens and monsters drawn in a fun way.

Well worth getting IPC humour annuals there was some nice longer stories in them and different artists experimenting with other characters...
