Review: City Under Siege

I love Hong Kong movies but I do not like Hong Kong sci-fi movies. They end up as embarassing pieces of nonsense (examples include "Wesley's Mysterious File", "Armageddon" and the recent "Future-X-Cops" - incidentally all of them starred Andy Lau!). Thankfully, Andy was nowhere to be seen in Benny Chan's latest superhero/sci-fi effort "City Under Siege". Instead, we got Aaron Kwok playing a super-hero clown with undefined superpowers after ingesting some weird poison-gas in Malaysia (yes, you read that right). Colin Chou and his gang also ingested the same gas but turned into Asian versions of the Abomination (from "The Incredible Hulk"). Aaron Kwok initially transformed himself into Andy Lau's character from "Love On A Diet" (so yes, there was still a homage to the thankfully absent Andy!) but later turned back into Aaron Kwok with flying daggers. In short, it was a film about irradiated Hong Kong baddies who turned into Abominations in Malaysia and then deciding to attack Hong Kong for fun.

The only two reasons to catch this film are Shu Qi and Zhang Jing Chu. Both looked unbelievably gorgeous throughout. Martial-arts star Wu Jing co-starred and got to trade some blows with Colin Chou but his character was so unlikeable that you'd rather that he had died fighting the baddies instead of the lovely Zhang Jing Chu.
