Death of Wizard Magazine

Wizard Magazine has been a part of my comic collecting life since the 1990s. It was announced earlier today that it will cease publication. Truth is, the last two issues that I bought (the Scott Pilgrim one and the one edited by Mark Millar) kind of hinted at this seeing as how the monthly mag was getting thinner and thinner with less and less features. My kids are now reading back issues and really loving them. Honestly, I'm rather sad to see it go but I guess in this age of online comic news-sites, the print media is really becoming irrelevant. For my life, despite my constant visits to online sites, nothing beats reading a 300-page magazine solely devoted to comicbooks. Especially in the can. I can't take my laptop into the toilet, can I? :(

Note: Toyfare is also cancelled. Guess we won't get anymore of the glorious Toyfare Twisted Theatre strips... Now I'm really SAD!!!

Death of a Marvel Icon

The news is out. The Human Torch aka Johnny Storm dies in "Fantastic Four #587". The issue is the final issue of the series that launched the Marvel Age of Comics and is brought to us by Jonathan Hickman (writer) and Steve Epting (artist). Following that pivotal issue, the same creative team will launch a new "FF" series.

As for me, I'm just glad that it's not Ben Grimm and that Ben is appearing regularly now in Bendis' "New Avengers" title.

In the meantime, check out preview pics of the fateful FF issue below:

Batman Parody: The Dark Knight is Confused

This video helps you to catch up on "The Dark Knight" before watching "The Dark Knight Rises". It's not really a parody so much as a testament to the truth that Chris Nolan's "The Dark Knight" pretty much SUCKED!!!

Comicbook Movie News

It's been confirmed. Anne Hathaway will play Selina Kyle in the next Batman film. Though whether or not she will actually don the Catwoman costume is still uncertain. Who knows? This may be Hathaway's breakout role after being the worst actress of the past 10 years?

Also, this bloke (Tom Hardy) will be playing Bane. Latinos should take to the streets and protest because they cast a White Man as Bane. I mean, the whites protested when they cast a black man as Heimdall in the "Thor" movie, right?

Anyway, here's the new Magneto in the upcoming "X-Men: First Class" played by Michael Fassbender. That's the coolest looking Mags helmet ever, don't you agree?

Finally, here's James McAvoy as Professor Charles Xavier (with hair) in "X-Men: First Class". What do you think? I think the star of "Atonement" and "Wanted" can nail the role of the Prof. anyday.

Missed Kiss

Highlights from DC Comics Solicitations for April 2011

Check out the latest DC Solicitations at CBR.

Among the things that caught my eye include:

The first "First Wave" hardcover. What's not to like? A cool story by Brian Azzarello featuring the GA Batman, Doc Savage and the Spirit. Also, very beautiful artwork with a noirish twang by Rags Morales and Phil Noto. This can’t-miss pulp fiction hardcover features FIRST WAVE #1-6 and BATMAN/DOC SAVAGE #1.

I've got the two "Justice Society" TPBs from the 1970s. This "Infinity Inc." hardcover picks up the story from there and features Power Girl, Huntress, Star-Spangled Kid, Nuklon, Jade and Obsidian - basically the offspring of the Golden Age characters. Even sweeter that the collection is in hardcover this time.

Dan Abnett and Andy Lanning ("DnA") have been doing some really good work on Marvel's Cosmic heroes as well as the new "Heroes for Hire" in recent years. However, the duo's greatest work (arguably) was on DC's Legion in the 1990s. This hardcover, "Legion Lost" collects the entire 12-issue series and features artwork by a young(er) Olivier Coipel - before he became a superstar artist after "House of M", "Thor" and "Siege".

Finally, something my daughter Moira will absolutely adore - the first hardcover volume collecting stories featuring JMS' Wonder Woman in her new costume! :)

Bishop favor gun control? Who knew? (Everyone)

It's not a surprise that the USCCB would be in favor of banning all private gun ownership, considering that we're in a phase where pacifism is touted as the answer to evil in the world. One would think that they'd consider what's happened in England since private ownership of hanguns has been disallowed.

And of course, with the situation in Tucson, again, it's guns that kill people, not people that kill people.

Read about it (about halfway down) in the news brief from Catholic News Service :
http://www.catholicnews.com/data/briefs/cns/20110114.htm

And of course, the NCR (reporter, not Register), had an article about the Bishops and gun control:

Sylvester Looney Tunes pictures

Sylvester J. Pussycat, Sr., also known as Puddy Tat (as in "I tawt I taw a puddy tat" and "bad ol' puddy tat", two sentences often repeated by his arch-nemesis Tweety Bird), gringo pussy-gato/SeƱor Pussycat (a sobriquet attached by another antagonist, Speedy Gonzales), Sylvester the Cat or simply Sylvester, is a fictional character, a three-time Academy Award-winning anthropomorphic Tuxedo cat in the Looney Tunes and Merrie Melodies repertory, often chasing Tweety Bird, Speedy Gonzales, or Hippety Hopper. The name "Sylvester" is a play on Felis silvestris, the scientific name for the wild cat species (domestic cats like Sylvester, though, are actually Felis catus). The character debuted in Friz Freleng's Life With Feathers (1945). Freleng's 1947 cartoon Tweetie Pie was the first pairing of Tweety with Sylvester, and the Bob Clampett-directed Kitty Kornered (1946) was Sylvester's first pairing with Porky Pig. Sylvester appeared in 96 cartoons in the golden age.  Sylvester was #33 on TV Guide's list of top 50 best cartoon characters, together with Tweety.
