Happy 60th Dennis the Menace!!

A very early Dennis from The Beano book 1954

A nice one by David Sutherland..

This is the annual I bought at a jumble sell at Northmead middle school Stoughton Road Guildford...I was first in line and ran to the book section (I loved old comics even then)and got this gem...this is where I discovered David Law's Dennis...what a effect it had on me..Dennis was less happy for a start unless he was causing bother trouble...the art work was more darker..quickly drawn But full of life..

Gordon Bells take on Dennis...he also had a bit of Davy Law in his take on Dennis..

Nigel does a great Dennis in this era...it has lots of energy!!

I love this long tiger story which Tom drew each week..

A nice strong cover by Jim Hanson

A nice 80's Beano..
My era of Dennis when he didn't have teeth:)
Love David Sutherlands take on Dennis the Menace and I think the best artist to draw Gnasher..

I've changed my bear picture..after my Mum said what was wrong with it...which I agreed...here is the new changes I've made and it looks a lot better..

Very funny details fill David Sutherland's early Bash Street kids pages

The Bash Street kids annual 1984.
As a good guess this was from the 1970's Beano

Love the amount of stuff Teacher needs for a potted plant!!

This is the gag that made me laugh out loud! Love the shoe boxes and the helpful horse upside down!

Also love the tadpole in the vinegar.

Other details there is a Roman guard looking out of the Bash Castle window..
Also like the speech balloon coming out of the hole in the handle of the pot..
love Fatty's eyes going up and down after being hit out of the pot..
The swimming sharks in the moat..
The fried egg painting..one looks real
The strange rubbish in the kitchen
The Plugish gargoyles

Leo Baxendale isn't the only artist to add lots of fun details..

Late 50's and 1960's Beano fun logo mastheads

A nice logo by Dudley D. Watkins. Has some echos to the new Lord Snooty the Third logo by Nigel P.

I like this one a lot by Leo..:)

Leo Baxendale has of course done some very good logos..mastheads..

Jim Petrie did some great logos different every week as well..sometimes the logo blended into the background of the picture.

A lovely fat horse..

Davy Law did some nice logos changing every week...this is when the logo showed a bit of the story.

Ron Spencer has done some super Little Plum logos.

David Sutherland has done some wonderful Bash Street logos and still drawing a different one today. The king of logos!!

Always liked the spinning top logo...

The Three Bears had some very memorable logos..maybe its because it made you hungry...drawn with relish by Bob McGrath.

What is fun about logo mastheads is it gives the artist a chance to be surreal...wacky..fun..
Maybe Todays Beano can bring back some mastheads fun...Ball Boy...Minnie the Minx..for example look a bit samey and could do with a change.
Lord Snooty the Third is good...Johnny Bean and of course Fred's Bed..
The Bash Street kids has the best logos in The Beano.

Beano book 1976-79

Interesting angles used on both pictures..good choices. A lower angle for the rolling snowball coming towards us and the characters. You can see undernesth there running boots. Then a high view to show the tree and the characters laughing. You can see the top of Lord Snootys Top hat. Also they are shown looking back. Great contrasts.

The bouncing goes with the bouncy clouds. Also love the Beano book wording being put behind the image. I like the fun 70's toy being used, also the face on it of Dennis the Menace. Good use of red throughout. I like this one best out of the ones shown here.

This again shows different angles...view points in each picture. Looking to the left then to the right..revealing the pond. This keeps the action moving.

lovely clouds formation on each of these images. Every Beano book title font was different from the next. Coloured depending on the main colour of the picture.
